Friday Memory

I
She studied astrology in her twenties
And found shelter in Americana.
She advertised off-Broadway dramas.
By thirty she left nothing behind.
There was no one to live her sorrow.

II
I should have known better
When I left your apartment long ago.
You told me it would be all right,
That we shouldn't stop the feelings.
It was love we dreamed of.
It was what we searched for.

I left you alone long ago.
I spent my time waiting for your call.
We knew it was lost forever.
It still had a hold on us.
But the door had already closed.

Was it love that we were feeling?
Was it love that we needed?
